I looked at my desk one day and decided it was time to clean it off and organize it. Matthew, my youngest walked by and was horrified. "Don't do that Mom," he said. You're taking apart my racetrack with all the mountains and hills!" I guess it really was time to clean my desk off!
--Carla Charter

When my seven-year-old was in Kindergarten the kids were sitting at circle time talking about what their parents did for a living. Hal informed his class his daddy ran a steam plant and his mommy wrote about the people in her head! I decided I had better explain to the teacher what I did after that comment!

I was reading a chapter from a current work in progress, a middle grade novel, to my husband.  When I finished reading, he looked at me with raised eyebrows and said, "Honey, that sounds like a real book!"

I've been begging my husband for a laptop or an Alpha Smart for literally years. A friend told me about one that was finally in our price range so I pointed it out to my husband with a hint-hint, it's almost my birthday and Christmas, and I really still want one.

My husband finally admitted "I'm afraid to buy you a laptop as you'd never stop writing. You'd take it with you everywhere. As it is, you read on your rocketbook reader at the kids baseball games last season."

I suppose I'll have to buy my own laptop or Alpha Smart and let him buy me jewelry for my birthday and Christmas.

When my daughter was two and a half and at pre-school she was busy scribbling on a piece of paper. Her teacher asked her what she was doing. "I'm writing an article!" came the confident reply. Of course, I was very proud!

I was crying over my most recent rejection letter; a brutal commentary in which the editor hated everything about my characters, plot and premise, when my twelve-year-old daughter walked into the room. She listened to my tale of woe, then patted me on the shoulder and said in all seriousness, "But Mom, why would you want anyone with such BAD TASTE to sell your books for you?" I had to laugh, and it made my day to see her faith in me.
---Diana Ball

The other day my brother, who is very dear to me said, "Well of course, with the kids and everything, you just have to see what you are doing as just a hobby." I know he was only trying to help but it was not helpful. He has since apologized.
